Founded by Japanese American George Aratani in 1948, Mikasa grew into a dinnerware wholesaler in the post-war era. It supplied china dishes to department stores like Bloomingdales, Macy’s and other fine retailers.

Although Mikasa — which translates to “three umbrellas” in Japanese — has diversified its product lines since then to crystal stemware, flatware, gifts and more, its classic dinnerware remains to be the company’s bread and butter.
