This work is about releasing from past ties, taking chances. Allowing yourself to take a breath and let things flow past you. The number 7 is relevant in the universal concepts of space, and the natural world. The action of hand stitching, is calming and repetitive resulting in a large leather sculptural canvas.
This artist stands out of her field for her marriage of mature conceptual approach and expertise in couching and working with textiles. She is attracting acclaim in the UK and Guilded will be presenting her work at the major fair 'Collect' at the international renowned Saatchi Gallery, London in February 2018.
Anita Carnell is a London-based artist who realises conceptual art through her expertise with textiles and needlework. She is a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework, has an Masters from the Camberwell School of Arts and is a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
Her new collection of hand-stitched leather wall art engages material that is part of the fabric of British heritage, in particular the use of the same golden wire used for formal dress by Royalty, the Military, Livery Companies and Guilds for over three centuries.
She presents in contemporary form traditional embroidery techniques such as back stitching and couching to explore the concept of ‘Ma’ (a Japanese word, meaning negative space) through leather panels hand-stitched in gold.
Carnell’s use of leather is inspired by ninth century Cordovan and Spanish moulded and decorated leather wall hangings which were used to adorn the palaces of Europe. She works with the natural shape of the hide, and threads her inspiration with her expertise, hand-stitching forms in gold thread, exploring the visible and invisible, and the passing of time. less
