moreTom Palmer (b: 1986) works with traditions of craftsmanship and material experimentation fused with contemporary design to create work spanning the spectrum of fine and decorative arts. He is perhaps best known for his extraordinary mirrors that read as art yet perform a dynamic reflective function as a mirror
Exploring material and process the Aegean Iris is a huge lens cast in translucent, cerulean blue tinted resin, layered over a hand silvered panel, set within a patinated steel frame. This creates a unique optical effect, magnifying and manipulating the reflection though the coloured lens, generating a layered triple reflection. When viewing the mirror it appears to change as you move creating a dynamic effect like no other mirror can: one moment you are looking into the iris of an eye, the next it feels like a pool of deep water.
Mounted in a deep-set patinated and oil sealed steel frame, the mirror is wall mounted on a split batten system. This effects simple hanging, which we can arrange as part of white-glove delivery.
This mirror is made to order. The standard lead time is 12 weeks, however since we have an existing mould for a 120cm convex panel, the lead time on this will be shorter. All other smaller sizes 12 weeks. It should be noted that because the effect is created using materials that start manipulation as liquids before being cured, every mirror will not be identical but be slightly different. The effect will be the same however.
