more An exquisite Gandharan life sized terracotta head of an unidentified bodhisattva. Hailing from the ancient region of Gandhara, in what is today Afghanistan and Pakistan, and dating to between the 3rd and 5th century.
Modeled in terracotta over a stucco core, the enlightened being looks out compassionately from downcast, eyes. While his features are classically Hellenistic, with a patrician nose, and dark, curly hair arranged in neat tresses, there is also a softness to him, from the rounded face and almond shaped eyes, that speak to an Eastern influence.
The ancient Kingdom of Gandhara was a Buddhist Greco-Bactrian kingdom located in modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan. As one of the last remnants of Alexander the Great's empire, it was more closely related to the Hellenistic world in terms of culture, language, and art, than it was to the Indo-Parthian region which it occupied, though over time the cultures began to merger, creating a beautiful blend of East and West, as is apparent in this figure.
