more Framed oil on canvas , inscribed on the reverse "for H.K. Corning, New York. A. Nichols Rome 1856", view of Rome looking south over the Tiber River toward Ponte Castel Sant’Angelo, the solid and elegantly-round fortress in the right foreground, and then further on to the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica (and the Vatican Museums), captures a view of some of Rome’s most important landmarks. This vantage point had been popular with painters from the beginning of the 19th century.
