moreThis painting depicting a profile of a female with red hair is a gouace on paper by Rene Marcil (b. 1917-1993). It is painted in colors of red, black, blue and sea-foam green. The piece is signed and dated in the lower right corner.

Rene Marcil was born in Montreal in 1917. And at the age of 14 was admitted to art school ( Ecole des Beaux Arts). At 17 he worked for an engraver servicing the advertising industry. A few years later he joined Morgan (a large department store) as an advertising illustrator and from there joined Eaton's (another large department store) advertising department where he was looked upon as its star artist. In 1941 he left for New York and worked as a fashion illustrator for Lord and Taylor. By the age of 30 Marcil was living the high life in a sumptous apartment in Manhattan's Eastside. Marcil then attended the Ecole de Paris from 1952-1965. In Paris Marcil joined in at La Grande Chaumiere a studio shared by artist of Ecole de Paris. Marcil then located to London from 1965-1980. It was there that Marcil explored his inner self and the workings of the mind. His figurative as well as abstract works reveal the importance of idealization in visual perception. He toned his talent as a colorist during this period. In his early eighties Marcil moved to the picturesque Medieval village of Tourrettes-
sur-Loup know as the world capital of the violet. These are know as his "Golden Period in France" 1981-1991. Those years were golden in that everything came together for Marcil. Using his superb draftsmanship mastery of color psychological insight and life experiences he expressed his unflinching analysis of human behavior centering on emotional detail and relationships in a social context. less
