Lee Reynolds

In the 1960s Lee Reynolds Burr founded Vanguard Studios, a Los Angeles-based enterprise that gave middle-class Americans the chance to own an artist-signed painting by way of a Warholian-like factory. The factory hired artists to repaint original pieces featuring palatable subject matter like flowers, seascapes, derby horses, and bullfighters—and sign all of them “Lee Reynolds.” It is with this, then, that Lee Reynolds pieces came to number in the thousands and the name itself became a the thing of sensational legend.
