Johnson Furniture Company

Founded in 1908 in Grand Rapids by three Swedish brothers, Johnson Furniture Co. created elegant, period-appropriate furniture by partnering with elite, trending designers. Years before companies like Knoll would standardize the practice, makers like Paul Frankl and Eero Saarinen’s father, Eliel, designed modern-leaning pieces that—while fashionable— maintained strong ties to a traditional elegance. That’s not to say that Johnson Furniture Co. pieces didn’t have a bit of fun too—one need only look to Frankl’s cutout-back armchair, which cheekily mimics open décolletage.
