Johnson Furniture Company

Description

We do applaud Johnson Furniture Co. furniture for taking inspiration from the most unexpected of places. Among them? Egyptian architecture, skyscrapers, and plunging necklines...

Founded in 1908 in Grand Rapids by three Swedish brothers, Johnson Furniture Co. created elegant, period-appropriate furniture by partnering with elite, trending designers. Years before companies like Knoll would standardize the practice, makers like Paul Frankl and Eero Saarinen’s father, Eliel, designed modern-leaning pieces that—while fashionable— maintained strong ties to a traditional elegance. That’s not to say that Johnson Furniture Co. pieces didn’t have a bit of fun too—one need only look to Frankl’s cutout-back armchair, which cheekily mimics open décolletage.
