John Marin

John Marin

John Marin employs oversaturated, bold watercolour paint to create his expressionist city and sea-scape paintings. Many of John Marin’s pieces, such as Maine Islands (1922), were influenced by the artist’s exposure to Cubist and Expressionist works through his relationship with famed photographer Alfred Stieglitz. The influence of Marin’s unique use of opaque watercolour images can be seen in the works of modern watercolor greats like Peter Haslam Fox.
