Gustav Stickley

Gustav Stickley

Inspired by the simplistic, honest forms of the English Arts & Crafts style, Gustav Stickley established his first furniture company in 1883. Equipped with the goal of reinterpreting the Arts movement in a thoroughly American way, Gustav Stickley pieces rely heavily on exposed joints and a right angle construction that could feel sparse, but instead emanates a nostalgic warmth—one that often leads to the furniture’s categorization as Mission style. The obvious, commanding impression it made can later be seen reinterpretations made by makers like Frank Lloyd Wright.
